Project Breakdown

For a Teenage Engineering design challenge, my colleague and friend Luis Miguel Gutiérrez and I developed a playful protective case concept for the iconic Pocket Operator series.
The idea was to turn the device into a collectible creature, inspired by Labubu figures and Sylvanian Families (シルバニアファミリー) — small toy-like companions you can carry, customize, and make part of your creative setup.

Concept

We wanted the Pocket Operator to feel alive, as if it had its own personality.
The case includes a loop system so it can be used as a keychain or charm, and a custom sticker sheet that lets users create their own expressions — adding eyes, mouths, and other playful details to make each one unique.

My Role

  • Concept direction and overall creative idea
  • Visual development, materials, and lighting exploration
  • Imported and refined Luis Miguel’s 3D model (OBJ) in Cinema 4D, bringing it to life through materials, textures, and dynamic lighting
  • Rendered and composited the final motion teaser in After Effects
  • Designed the sticker sheet in Procreate and Illustrator
  • Composed and produced the soundtrack using my Pocket Operator Submarine
  • Presentation layout and storytelling for portfolio delivery

(Luis Miguel developed the initial 3D model and technical base using an industrial design workflow before exporting the OBJ.)

Process

  • Reference research – Labubu, Sylvanian Families, designer toys, and collectible accessories
  • Concept sketches – exploring silhouettes, ergonomics, and personality
  • Model translation – importing the OBJ from my colleague CAD environment into Cinema 4D
  • Material study & rendering – exploring translucent plastics, soft rubber, and gloss finishes
  • Motion composition – short reveal animation in After Effects
  • Sound design – rhythm and texture created with the Pocket Operator Submarine
  • Customization layer – sticker sheet design for personalization

Motion Design

A looping teaser where the Pocket Operator drops into frame, the case snaps on, and it “comes alive” with eyes and expressions. Stickers pop in sync with the music, enhancing its playful personality. The animation closes with a subtle idle motion — breathing life into a tiny, carryable companion.

Visual Assets

  • 3D renders by Luis Miguel Gutiérrez
  • Motion teaser and compositing by Aldo Murillo.
  • Sticker sheet mockup (flat + applied) by Aldo Murillo.
  • Sketches and visual references by Aldo Murillo.
