Project Breakdown

Role: Animation
Contributions: Animated spreads from two illustrated books and the humanoid robot + robotic dog AR guides. Collaborated with students who prepared vector assets and with the AR integration team for deployment.

As part of a collaborative project led by professor María Elena Melón in partnership with a library in Berlin, I created animations for a selection of illustrated books. The initiative aimed to explore how augmented reality could enhance reading experiences and invite the German community to engage with literature in playful, visual ways.

Source Material

Between Intelligent Machines

  • Authors: CosiCosa (Cristina Valero, Laura Malinverni, Isabel Garcia, Marie-Monique Schaper)

  • Illustrator: Ana Seixas

  • Description: A humorous and vibrant introduction to artificial intelligence, exploring how autonomous cars, smartphones, talking toys, and smart devices shape our daily lives while raising important ethical questions.

In Great Numbers

  • Author: Clive Gifford

  • Illustrator: Adam Watkins

  • Description: A beautifully illustrated journey through the history of numbers and their role in human progress, from ancient counting systems to modern data and technology.

Animation Approach

My role was to bring static editorial illustrations to life through motion graphics, carefully respecting the original visual identity while enhancing storytelling with movement. Each spread called for a unique rhythm:

Playful bounces and bright gestures for the children’s book spreads.

Mechanical sequences and flowing codes for the historical and technological pages.

The animations were designed as loopable sequences ready to be integrated into AR platforms, allowing the illustrations to “come alive” when viewed through a device.

Process

  1. Illustration Analysis – Identifying motion potential in each spread.
  2. Styleframes – Establishing consistency with the original graphic style.
  3. Animation Tests – Exploring interactions like light flickers, flowing code, robotic gestures.
  4. Final Integration – Delivering optimized animations for AR deployment.

AR Guides

The project also included AR guides a humanoid robot and its robotic dog that served as companions across all the books in the collection. Each title adapted these characters to fit its own visual style.

My specific role was to animate the robot and dog for the AR experiences. The character design and AR adaptation were developed by other members of the team, while I focused on bringing the illustrations into motion.

Collaborators

This project was a team effort. While I carried out most of the animation work, I collaborated closely with students and colleagues who provided Illustrator assets, original artwork, and AR development.
